TOM CORBETT SPACE CADET

Tom Corbett is the main character in a series of Tom Corbett — Space Cadet stories that were depicted in television, radio, books, comic books, comic strips, coloring books, punch-out books and View-Master reels in the 1950s. The stories followed the adventures of Tom Corbett, Astro, and Roger Manning, cadets at the Space Academy as they train to become members of the elite Solar Guard. The action takes place at the Academy in classrooms and bunkrooms, aboard their training ship the rocket cruiser Polaris, and on alien worlds, both within our solar system and in orbit around nearby stars.

1952 - 1956 published by Grosset & Dunlap. Written under the pseudonym Carey Rockwell, with Willy Ley as technical advisor.

  • Stand By For Mars (1952)
  • Danger in Deep Space (1953)
  • On the Trail of the Space Pirates (1953)
  • The Space Pioneers (1953)
  • The Revolt on Venus (1954)
  • Treachery in Outer Space (1954)
  • Sabotage in Space (1955)
  • The Robot Rocket (1956)

In 1953 a slim children's book titled Tom Corbett's Wonder Book of Space (or Tom Corbett: A Trip to the Moon) was written by Marcia Martin and published by Wonder Books.

Grosset began publishing during the early part of the century with the reprinting of the Tarzan books and was an established publisher of juvenile series books (such as Nancy Drew, Hardy boys, Rick Brant, et.al.) when G & D began the serialization of Tom Corbett's adventures in 1952. The Tom Corbett books were a tie-in with an established TV character with a copyright held by Rockhill RADIO. Many of the plot lines in the G&D books have direct cross-over story lines from the radio shows.

The Tom Corbett books have similar plots found in the radio,TV and comic book series. The first three TC books have story elements drawn from the radio & TV series while the fourth book's storyline is similar to the Dell comic #421.

The TC novels were written under the house name of Carey Rockwell. Attempts to locate the author or authors writing under the house name of Carey Rockwell have been unsuccessful. Jerry Bail's WHO'S WHO IN COMICS, list Joseph Greene as editor of Grosset & Dunlap during the early 1950's and writer for the Tom Corbett Comic books published by Dell. It may be possible that Mr Greene developed some of the story lines and plots while others completed the story. This seemed to be a common practice for many publisher's of juvenile fiction. If Mr. Greene is the same author mentioned in James Gunn's Science Fiction history ALTERNATE WORLDS, he is listed as a NEW writer of the 1960's. It may be that Mr.Greene cut his teeth on the Tom Corbett series first. (Note: New information in Part II)

STAND BY FOR MARS: Calling all boys and girls to Mercury, Venus, Jupiter and all points in outer space -- You, too, can be a part of the group of daring adventurers from the Space Academy who travel to mysterious lands in outer space on dangerous and exciting missions. It's a simple as opening a book... if the book is Tom Corbett, Space Cadet! You'll discover the Earth of the future, where you can hurtle through space at breath-taking speed, and a trip to Mars will be as simple as taking a walk around the block.

DANGER IN DEEP SPACE: Tom Corbett and his friends, Astro and Roger Manning, participate in the most daring undertaking in all space history. While on an experimental trip in the Polaris to test out some new equipment they and Captain Connel learn of a scheme of a pair of notorious space freebooters to steal the rich mineral resources of one of the planet Tara's small satellites. To foil the scheme the members of the Polaris crew themselves land on the satellite with the daring plan to blast it out of Tara's orbit and into Earth's orbit where its valuable mineral wealth may replenish Earth's shortages.

ON THE TRAIL OF THE SPACE PIRATES: This is the story of how Bull Coxine with his crew of cutthroat pirates came within an ace of taking control of the space lanes by threatening to destroy the great Solar Alliance, and how Tom Corbett and his two pals, Roger Manning and Astro of the Polaris unit, helped to foil the giant buccaneer's desperate scheme.

THE SPACE PIONEERS: When Tom Corbett and his Polaris unit mates, Roger and Astro, were assigned to the great expedition of one thousand space ships carrying pioneer colonists billions of miles to the satellite Roald, they did not dream that they were facing the most thrilling adventures of their careers.

THE REVOLT ON VENUS: For the young cadets of the famous Space Academy Polaris unit a month's leave would seem to be a perfect time for rest. But they have other ideas when they plan a trip to the jungles of Venus. There they hope to hunt the most terrifying of all big game––the mighty Tyrannosaurus Rex!

TREACHERY IN OUTER SPACE: When Tom Corbett and his two pals are assigned to monitor the three giant spaceships which are entered in the most famous race in all space history, an adventure begins which is bound to make your blood tingle. The race is to the spaceport of the planet Titan where rich crystal mines are located...

SABOTAGE IN SPACE: What started out as an innocent campus prank at Space Academy almost cost the Polaris unit the chance to become officers in the Solar Guard. For punishment, Tom, Roger, and Astro were assigned to spend all their spare time on guard duty in the vicinity of a new building which housed the latest hush-hush project so important to the solar universe.

The first four or five books in the series follow the radio and TV shows, but by the time the last two books are written a different writing style is noted, basic information is different and Roger Manning is transferred to Mars Academy. The last book, ROBOT ROCKET, was written during or after the TV series had ended in 1956 thus ending a four year run of solar adventures by the cadets.
