An elf (plural elves) is a being of Germanic mythology. The elves were originally thought of as a race of divine or semi-divine beings (wights, vættir) endowed with magical powers, which they use both for the benefit and the injury of mankind. In pre-Christian mythology, they appear to have been divided into light elves and dark elves, difficult to delineate from the Æsir (gods) on one hand and the dvergar (dwarves) on the other.
In early modern and modern folklore, they become associated with the fairies of Romance folklore and assume a diminutive size, often living underground in hills or rocks, or in wells and springs. 19th-century Romanticism attempted to restore them to full stature, often depicting them as very young, probably adolescent (lack of facial hair on male elves), men and women of great beauty. From their depiction in Romanticism, elves entered the 20th-century high fantasy genre in the wake of the publications of J. R. R. Tolkien, especially the posthumous publication of his Silmarillion where Tolkien's treatment of the relation of light elves, dark elves, black elves and dwarves in Norse mythology is made explicit.

Sex and the Archetypical Female Gamer
"If we so much as let one female rise through the ranks of the industry we could start a revolution that would make all our games cuddly and Sims-like." Aaron McKenna writes last month in his "Saturday Gamer" column.
Aaron, I am one of many females who has risen through the ranks of the industry. I promise you when we meet in cyberspace there will not only be a revolution but I will give you a fair fight, and we'll see who comes out the winner. I promise no cuddling and no coddling. And I have never, ever played the Sims.
It is time to explode some of the myths of women gamers, some perpetuated by certain THG's male columnists and game writers.
There are plenty of women gamers who are just as dedicated to the same games as guys. And some of us are even as well endowed with flat stomachs, too, just like some of the avatars that we use to represent us in our games. A figure like that takes lots of blood, sweat and tears to maintain.

But before Sexy Elf can kill Legolas's younger sister the Horn of Gondor sounds
in the background signaling lunch break or something. The Bright Wizard (who I
thought was dead) rather kindly thaws out the Blondie Elf's legs and all the
characters gather round a large gateway as a Chaos Chosen who looks like Sauron
with horns walks out followed by a Greater Demon of Tzeentch that has a bit of
trouble fitting through the arch. The End. Please note there are Dwarfs
in this trailer but if you blink you might miss them.

Girl Gamers in World of Warcraft
To the dismay of much of the population of World
of Warcraft, and the online community, girls do play video games. What makes a
girl play a game online? Are they looking to pick up boys? Are they so socially
inept that they can’t talk to anyone in the real world? Are they just plain
ugly? Or are they really just a guy pretending to be a girl? None of these
things are true. They play the game for the same reason everyone plays. They
play for entertainment. Though women in the real life are striving for equality
in a male dominated world, and arguably making progress, the ladies playing
online games have a much harder task in front of them.
The exact ratio of female players to male players in WOW is not known, but it is
a far lower number than in the real world. Roderick, of the Mal’Ganis Server
estimates, "I’d guess I know maybe ten girl players on this server."
Roderick ran a guild of over 200 people, that’s a staggeringly low percentage.
With that sort of male saturation, girl gamers can have a tough time breaking
into the "boys club" that exists beneath the surface.
The male population of the any online community, WOW included, is highly
competitive, and the general feeling in an aggressive activity is that girls
cannot perform on the same level as boys. On the virtual battlefield its far
from true, but girl gamers are still considered underdogs and have to prove
themselves worthy. They may come under harder scrutiny simply because they are
female.

The first episode almost didn't happen.

I don’t trust myself to get within 30 feet of World of
Warcraft, for fear that I will become hopelessly addicted to it and wake up
thirty years later living under a bridge playing via stolen wi-fi as the rest of
