YOUR TIME MACHINE TO THE PAST! Contact Us: Swapsale@aol.com FILM DIANA DORS
1931-1984 She was an English actress who didn’t have the same following in the U.S. as she did overseas, but she could definitely compete with the American blonde bombshells looks-wise. She didn’t mind starring in less-than-glamorous roles, and an episode of The Alfred Hitchcock Show she starred in was so grisly that it was banned from being shown for years. Diana Dors (23 October 1931 – 4 May 1984) was an English actress and sex symbol. She was born Diana Mary Fluck in Swindon, England, and was educated at Colville House in Swindon. She was considered the English equivalent of the blonde bombshells of Hollywood. Diana Dors studied at London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and aged 16 was under contract to the Rank Organisation, appearing in many of their films. It appears that from a certain period, her appearance became markedly similar to Marilyn Monroe's. She often played characters suffering from unrequited love, perhaps an unfortunate parallel to her private life. She also had significant acting ability, which was destined never to be fully utilized (most of her later work is made up of sex-themed comedies that featured scenes near to soft-core pornography). Her success was such that, aged 20, she was the youngest registered owner of a Rolls Royce in the UK. According to film buffs, her best work as an actress was when she played a murderess in the 1956 film Yield to the Night. She was also willing to play repulsive characters in films such as The Amazing Mr. Blunden, The Unholy Wife, and Timon of Athens. Dors never had quite the same following in the United States, but recently has made a comeback due to her films having been shown on classic movie channels such as Turner Classic Movies. She also worked under the name of Diana d'Ors. During the summer of 1961, she filmed The Sorceror's Apprentice (based on Robert Bloch's story "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" for Alfred Hitchcock Presents, and which co-starred Brandon De Wilde) that was so grisly, it was barred from airing and not released for many decades.[1] MORE: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diana_Dors ---------------------------------
Rare picture of Diana, aged
12, The Diana behind the image was only allowed to come to the fore when age inevitably began to bury that sylph-like figure underneath more matronly proportions. She became a character actress of considerable talent and then a personality seen frequently on television and heard on the radio. But it was her regular spot on TVam which enchanted millions. On TVam Diana was famous for her 'Slim-in' with the Dors
Dozen, openly flaunting those extra stones. In 'Open Dors', an Agony Aunt slot
which followed, she answered viewers problems with a vision and depth that could
only have come from living a life to the full. Above all, we knew she really
cared. She possessed an unforgettable warmth and sincerity in her eyes and
winning smile.Few knew these disguised the agony and trauma of a cancerous
tumour which she was trying valiantly and courageously to overcome. When Diana
died we all felt we had lost a friend, a member of the family. At Diana's
funeral at the Sacred Heart Church in Sunningdale Berkshire on May 11 1984,
Father Theodore Fontanari read one of the countless letters and postcards of
tribute that had come flooding in. It said: "I am without faith. I know that something is missing in my life. Like millions I loved our dear Diana, not as a sex goddess, film star, but as a genuine person who one could feel would befriend you. My heart is saddened. Without her lovely being, our world is much poorer. I will now search for what she had found". MORE: http://www.dianadors.co.uk/1_photos_37.html ----------------------------------------------

In addition to appearing in films and on television, Dors made a few musical recordings, the most notable being her 1960 Columbia Records album, the cleverly titled Swinging Dors. One of the best known tunes from it was the wonderfully cheesy "Roller Coaster Blues."
Dors was paid a high compliment in 1967 when The Beatles chose to put her image on the cover of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band among the Fab Four's other pop cultural influences and heroes. Diana Dors - Swingin' Dors album reissuedDiana Dors is something of an icon of British popular culture. Her heyday was in the 50s as the glamorous movie star (check out the excellent Yield To The Night), with a career that continued, albeit steadily in decline, until her death in 1984. She even made it onto the cover of The Beatles' Sgt Pepper's album. And staying on that musical tip, Diana Dors made music - and that now sought-after Swingin' Dors album from 1960 is getting a reissue (presumably named after the biography pictured here). It's lounge-style swing, 12 tracks with orchestration by producer/arranger Wally Stott. It's released as a limited, individually numbered vinyl LP as well as a CD digipack. Both formats copy the gatefold sleeve of the original and include a 12-page full colour booklet featuring rare and previously unpublished photographs. It's available from 24th September 2007.
