FILM

DENNIS HOPPER

http://www.spookytoms.com/Dennis_Hopper_Tribute.html

Dennis Lee Hopper (born May 17, 1936) is an American actor, filmmaker and artist. As a young man, Hopper became interested in acting and eventually became a student of the Actors Studio. He made his first television appearance in 1955, and appeared in two films featuring James Dean, Rebel Without a Cause (1955) and Giant (1956). Over the next ten years, Hopper appeared frequently on television in guest roles, and by the end of the 1960s had played supporting roles in several films. He directed and starred in Easy Rider (1969), winning an award at the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay as co-writer of the film's script.

He was unable to build on his success for several years, until a featured role in Apocalypse Now (1979) brought him attention. He subsequently appeared in Rumble Fish (1983) and The Osterman Weekend (1983), and received critical recognition for his work in Blue Velvet and Hoosiers, with the latter film garnering him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He directed Colors (1988), and portrayed Bowser in the film version of Super Mario Bros. (1993) and the villain in Speed (1994). Hopper's more recent work includes a leading role in the television series Crash.

Hopper is a prolific photographer, painter, and sculptor whose works are exhibited worldwide.[1

American International Pictures, 1968 American one-sheet film poster for the cult film exploitation response to the Summer of Love, "The Trip." A film whose creative team would still be hipster central today, directed by Roger Corman, written by Jack Nicholson, and starring Peter Fonda, Bruce Dern, and Dennis Hopper.

BLUE VELVET 1986

Blue Velvet is a 1986 American mystery film written and directed by David Lynch, that exhibits elements of both film noir and surrealism. The film features Kyle MacLachlan, Isabella Rossellini, Dennis Hopper and Laura Dern. The title Blue Velvet is taken from the 1963 Bobby Vinton song of the same name. The film was decidedly acclaimed by critics,[1][2] although initially detested by some mainstream critics. The film earned Lynch his second Academy Award nomination for Best Director. As an example of a director casting against the norm, Blue Velvet is also noted for re-launching Dennis Hopper's career and providing Isabella Rossellini a dramatic outlet beyond work as a fashion model and a cosmetics spokeswoman for which she was formerly known.

Isn't that a Hopper?

Posted by: Chris Palmeri on February 06, 2007

Apartment buildings—the nicer ones—and condo towers often decorate their walls with art. Azzurra, a high rise condo complex in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Marina del Rey, took that idea a step further, giving three creative types studio space in the building. The three “Artisits in Residence” are Dennis Hopper, Peter Alexander and Joe Goode. Hopper, the well-known star of Easy Rider and Blue Velvet, is also an accomplished photographer. He uses the condo space to do his digital printing while gazing out at the boats in the nearby harbor.

Deitch's LA MOCA Debut: Dennis Hopper Survey?

A Dennis Hopper survey is on the short list of  inaugural shows to be presented  at LA MOCA under new director Jeffrey Deitch, according to a Los Angeles source. Deitch has said he aims to incorporate shows with broad appeal into MOCA’s exhibition schedule. Hopper’s easy-on-the-eyes photos and paintings populated by the Hollywood and art set fit the bill.

Hopper, who is undergoing treatment for advanced prostate cancer, is best known for films including the 1969 Easy Rider and the 1979 Apocalypse Now. He has also been photographing since the 1960s. Over the years he has also experimented with different painting styles.  Tony Shafrazi presented a large show of Hopper’s work, Sign of the Times last fall. Included were photographs and photo-realist paintings of artist Jasper Johns, Bruce Conner and Larry Bell.
