BOOK REVIEW

THE CHRONICLES OF CONAN VOL. 1

From Dark Horse Comics, this volume collects the works of Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith, the two men who created the comic book version of Conan and who, for my money, have yet to be topped.  This is Conan at his best.  Actually, it's even better than that since the art work has completely remastered color.

Quite aside from the 160 pages of vibrant art and story, The Chronicles of Conan also contains a six page article by Roy Thomas detailing exactly how Conan come to be a Marvel comic book.  This alone is a must for fans of Conan, Marvel, Thomas and Windsor-Smith.

BTW, Barry Windsor-Smith was one of those rare artists who people immediately recognized as an important and unique talent, despite early work that was a little shaky.  Rereading these old tales one is once again struck by his creativity -- a true original, no house style for him.
