This book by Yak El-Droubie & Ian C. Parliment with a forward by Chaz Royal, chronicles the very near complete history of burlesque in posters, almost everyone of them in vibrant color, as fresh as the day they were originally printed. More than anything, it is a standout study of burlesque posters as an art form, whatever their original intent.
Here's what Chaz Royal has to say in his forword:
"Welcome to the wild and wonderful world of poster imagery. What is burlesque, you may ask? Some would say it is the lost art of striptease, others would say it is a way of mocking popular culture through self expression. But burlesque is part of the popular culture in many ways. Today's burlesque movement now spans the globe and having a unique and dedicated branding for your review, company, or solo performance is as important as what is being perceived on stage. Decades ago when burlesque was at its original peak, between the 1930s and 1960s, the style of art work presented by burlesque theater productions or dedicated burlesque houses was as broad as the styles of today's images, but certainly not as refined. The posters and images that were created then were often cut and paste screen prints, hand paintings or very rough and barrowed images; these were used mainly for newsprint adverts or hand leaflets.
